Lecture on History of Modern and Contemporary Architecture
The History of Modern and Contemporary Architecture course focuses on the three paradigm shifts (important changes in values) that occurred in the 200 years from the mid-19th century, when the modern era began, to the 21st century, and examines what paradigm shifts occurred in each aspect: architects, technology, architectural education and conservation. The purpose of this lecture is to develop a historical perspective on these three paradigm shifts in terms of architects, technology, architectural education, and preservation.
In addition, students will research the designated architectures and events on their own in the lectures, as well as strengthen their memory and expression of visual images by sketching architectural exteriors, interior spaces, details, streetscapes, plans, sections, diagrams, etc. while working with their hands.

In the History of Architectural Culture (former Architectural Aesthetics) class, we will discuss the relationship between aesthetics (aesthetics = sensibility studies) and architecture, which was born in 18th century Germany, and the history of Western conceptual thought and visual representation from ancient times to the present day. In the Session 1 as architecture as Space, we will discuss perspective and self portrait, landscape garden in England and France. In Session 2, as architecture as time, we will discuss rebirth, ruins, and change in the perception of time, and in Session 3, as architecture as interface, we will attempt to connect Session 1 and 2 and discuss organic thinking and ecology in the perception of life. The lecture will be given from the viewpoints of organic thinking and ecology in the perception of life. The entire session will be divided into three sessions, and we will discuss the possibilities of how to see and feel architecture in the future, while considering what kind of intellectual thoughts or how new intellectual thoughts and architecture emerged at the intersection of the vertical and horizontal axes of these three sessions. The purpose of this class is to increase students' intellectual curiosity to work on their own design assignments and thesis research.
The purpose of this class is to understand the existence of architecture and cities since the Renaissance as cultural phenomena, and to learn how ideas, thoughts, and methods of expression have changed in the social context through hands-on sketching.
