渡邉研究室について

 

　渡邉が2005年4月に東海大学工学部建築学科助教授として着任し、2006年4月から14名の第1期卒業研究ゼミ生が研究室に所属して渡邉研究室の活動はスタートしました。渡邉の着任前まで約20年に及ぶ東京とロンドンでの設計実務と研究活動の経験を踏まえて、渡邉研究室は近代建築の保存・再生を軸に、調査・計画・設計と近代建築史研究の連関性を取りながら、国際的な視野に立った研究活動を行うことを考えております。

　近代建築保存・再生においては、渡邉のロンドン留学時1996年の第4回DOCOMOMO国際会議スロバキアの出席を始まりとして、2年に1回開催されるDOCOMOMO国際会議及び国際学生ワークショップへの参加（第12回ソウル大会、第13回リスボン大会第16回東京大会に計14名が参加）を実施しており、学生が国際的な知的発表と交流の場を築くことを重要な研究教育のミッションと考えております。

　近代建築史研究においては、学生自らが設定した課題テーマにおける論文を日本建築学会や関連団体による研究会において発表し、近代建築史研究の学術的交流を高めることをミッションとしております。また学術的活動の一環として、渡邉が進めている英語文献の読解力や分析力、編集力などを高めることもできます。

　2017年からは、これまでの活動を見直しつつ、設計、歴史研究、保存再生を統合する新たな領域：「ニューロアーキテクチャ」と呼ぶ認知建築学 として、建築空間の総合的な認知手法や表現方法の可能性を模索し、2023年までをめどにその基礎的な研究理論と実践的手法を構築していく予定であります。

　研究室の方針は、1870年スコットランドのグラスゴーから工学部大学校の校長として来日したヘンリー・ダイアーによる「頭と手＝MENTE ET MANU」による教員と学生との「知的相互啓発＝INTELLECTURAL MUTAL EDIFICATIONS」にあります。

 

About Watanabe Laboratory 

 

Watanabe joined Tokai University in April 2005 as an associate professor in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, and the activities of the Watanabe Laboratory began in April 2006 with 14 students in the first graduating class of the laboratory. Based on Watanabe's 20 years of design practice and research experience in Tokyo and London prior to his appointment, the Watanabe Laboratory is focused on the preservation and revitalization of modern architecture, and seeks to conduct research activities from an international perspective, while linking research, planning, and design with the study of modern architectural history.

　In the field of modern architectural preservation and revitalization, the Watanabe Laboratory has participated in biennial DOCOMOMO international conferences and international student workshops(14 students participated in the 12th Seoul, 13th Lisbon, and 16th Tokyo conferences), beginning with the 4th DOCOMOMO international conference in Slovakia in 1996 when Watanabe was studying in London . We consider it an important mission of our research and education to provide students with opportunities for international intellectual presentations and exchanges.

　In the area of modern architectural history research, our mission is to enhance academic exchange in the study of modern architectural history by having students present papers on their own assigned themes at conferences of the Architectural Institute of Japan and related organizations. As part of their academic activities, students will also be able to improve their reading, analytical, and editing skills of English literature, which Watanabe is working on.

　From 2017, while reviewing the past activities, we plan to explore the possibilities of comprehensive cognitive methods and representations of architectural space as a new field: cognitive architecture called "Neuro Architecture" which integrates design, historical research, and conservation and revitalization, and to develop the basic research theory and practical methods for this field by 2023.

　The policy of the laboratory is based on "intellectual mutual enlightenment = INTELLECTURAL MUTUAL EDIFICATIONS" between faculty and students by "head and hands = MENTE ET MANU" by Henry Dyer, who came to Japan from Glasgow, Scotland in 1870 as the principal of the Engineering College.
